From our projects

Travertine, an ashlar pattern, and a poolside finish.

There’s something inviting about the variation in travertine. On this pool deck, the warm tones and ashlar layout give the stone a relaxed, settled feel. The pattern is part of the appeal, but the finish and everyday care deserve just as much thought.

A varied pattern, with an overall sense of order.

Ashlar combines different rectangular and square pieces in a repeating arrangement. Here, the variation in the stone keeps that arrangement from feeling too rigid. I like to look at the layout across the whole space, including the pool edge, borders, and the places where one surface meets another.

If you’re considering a similar look, we can compare samples and discuss the pattern before you order. Seeing several pieces together tells you much more than choosing from one small sample.

The surface treatment needs to suit the stone.

This project used an impregnating sealer and a slip-resistant coating. Those choices belong to this installation; I would want to discuss the particular stone, its finish, and the conditions around your pool before recommending a treatment for yours.

The Natural Stone Institute explains that impregnating products improve resistance to staining without making stone stain-proof. The supplier and treatment manufacturer should guide the choice of product and ongoing care. A surface treatment also isn’t a promise that a wet deck can never be slippery.

Let’s think about water and daily use.

Before we settle on the look, tell me how you use the area. Do you entertain outside? Is there a covered section? How does the deck connect to the house and garden? Those answers help us talk about the layout, the surface underfoot, and maintenance.

For tiled exterior areas, TCNA highlights drainage, suitable materials, and allowance for movement as important planning considerations. The appropriate construction depends on the project; a photograph of a finished surface cannot establish what should go underneath yours.

Bring the idea. We can work through the details.

You don’t need to know the name of a pattern to get started. Send a photograph of a look you like, or a few pictures of your existing outdoor space. I can visit your property in the Venice or Sarasota area and help you compare the options.

The aim is a poolside space that feels right for your home, with clear expectations about the installation and the care it will need.

Let’s talk about your space.

Send a few photographs, a question, or the beginning of an idea. I’ll help you work out the next step.
