Expert advice

Good tile work starts with a good working relationship.

When you invite someone into your home to work, you should feel comfortable asking questions. I want us to have a clear conversation about the tile, the work involved, and how the project will be handled before we begin.

Ask about work that is relevant to yours.

A kitchen backsplash, a stone floor, and a shower involve different details. Ask to see examples that help you understand the kind of work you are planning, and talk through what is important to you about the finish.

Photographs are a useful starting point. I’m also happy to discuss the preparation, layout decisions, and finishing details that belong to your particular project.

Compare what the proposals actually include.

Two prices can describe very different amounts of work. Look for a clear scope covering the agreed preparation, installation, materials, and finishing details. If something is unclear, ask before making your decision.

TCNA recommends checking references and asking contractors for proof of insurance, any required license, and relevant installation qualifications. Its guidance also emphasizes comparing the work included in estimates. Those are sensible questions to bring to any contractor.

Talk about the way the work will happen.

We should discuss access, the work area, the expected stages, and coordination with anyone else involved. I care about respectful communication and an organized workspace, and I want you to know what to expect.

If the conditions change once work begins, the next step should be a conversation about what has been found and what it means for the scope. Clear expectations help both of us make better decisions.

Bring the questions that matter to you.

You may be ready to choose materials, or you may need an impartial opinion about an existing installation. Tell me what you are trying to achieve and where you would like some guidance. I’ll explain what I can assess and what information would help.
